Diane B.
I get a good night sleep now, and I don’t need a nap in the afternoon, and I’m not hearing from my husband, “Breathe. Breathe.” In the middle of the night, he was waking me up, because I wasn’t breathing, and I don’t get that anymore.
The CPAP machine was once the only treatment option for patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Now, a more comfortable alternative is available for those with mild, moderate, or severe (CPAP-intolerant) sleep apnea. The oral appliance is one of our patients’ most popular choices to treat sleep apnea.
Here are the main differences between the oral appliance vs. CPAP in Novi:
The Sleep Apnea Center of Novi is dedicated to treating your sleep apnea issues in the least invasive, most comfortable way possible. Our oral appliances come in different varieties and are a comfortable solution for many people. Like the CPAP, an oral appliance will reduce your symptoms and improve your overall health.
Our patients find that both CPAP and the oral appliance resolve their symptoms and give them a great night’s sleep. Give us a call at 248-264-3922 to schedule a free consultation and find out which of these options is best for you.
The CPAP is a reliable sleep apnea treatment and still remains the main treatment for central sleep apnea. But many people find it intolerable. In fact, the CPAP compliance rate is less than 50 percent. It’s so uncomfortable that many patients simply give up and forgo treatment entirely.
Not treating sleep apnea is dangerous. People who leave sleep apnea untreated increase their risk of problems that cause millions of deaths in America every year, like:
Our nightly compliance rate with the oral appliance is outstanding at over 95 percent. Patients get relief within a few days to a few months from most of their symptoms. They can finally sleep well and have peace of mind knowing they are reducing their risk of deadly health problems.

Both options treat sleep apnea effectively. Sometimes the best treatment choice, however, is the option you will use on a regular basis. The oral appliance works for mild and moderate cases very well and in severe cases where patients are intolerant to CPAP.
A CPAP uses pressurized air to keep your airway open while you sleep. A CPAP takes in air from the environment and pressurizes it (the degree to which it’s pressurized depends on the severity of your disorder). The air travels through a tube to a face mask. When you breathe the air in through the mask, it keeps your throat tissue from collapsing and blocking your airway.
The noise level will vary depending on the specific machine. Keeping the machine’s filter clean may help reduce noise. If the noise bothers you or a bed partner, you can ask about adding extra tubing so you can move the machine farther from the bed. You can also use earplugs or a white noise machine. If you’d prefer to avoid the hassle, you may be able to use an oral appliance instead of a CPAP.
